If you are anything like us, the only thing that gets you through these long nights, gloomy days and the frantic pace of modern life is the thought of your family holiday. Quality time together where no one has to be anywhere and time tables are forgotten. If you are wondering where to go on holiday this year, we’ve done some of the work for you. No matter what your budget is we have a destination that could work for you.
Watching this video, there is no doubt we are lucky enough to live in one of the world’s most beautiful countries. Holidaying in Ireland’s Ancient East offers the chance for your family to get to know more about our 5,000 year history, no matter what you are interested in or enjoy doing there is likely to be an area or route within the ancient east that is right for you.
Why this year? Although the wild Atlantic way often steals the limelight when it comes to scenery in Ireland, the ancient east has as much to offer when it comes to really understanding Ireland, its history and people.
Where you stay really depends on what interests your family most. The great news is there is every imaginable form of accommodation available in the ancient east from glamping at Rock Farm Slane to self-catering thatched cottages in Kilkenny.
This list is virtually endless but here are a few suggestions:
It’s not called the garden of Ireland for nothing. Why not take the family on one of many beautiful hikes through the parklands at Glendalough. There are so many wonderful routes to choose from you are sure to find the right one for your family. One of our favourite’s is the silver route along the woodland road which brings you to parts of the park not visited by many tourists.
If you are looking for something more sedate, a trip to Powerscourt in Wicklow could be a lovely way to spend the day. Picnic by the waterfall , stroll through the gardens and have lunch in the delicious Avoca café.
Story telling at Jerpoint Park, Co Kilkenny; combine a visit to a working farm with a tour of the lost town of Jerpoint. A 12th century town that contained a court house, a woollen mill and a number of taverns amongst other amenities. What happened and why this town didn’t thrive in the way nearby Kilkenny did? Your guide will fill you in.
These suggestions really are only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to holidaying in the ancient east. On top of these suggestions there are the ancient sites in the Boyne valley, Viking sites in Waterford, castles and monasteries to beat the band. Whatever happens on your family holiday to the ancient east, you won’t be bored!
