What is Personal Accident cover?

 

Accidents happen all the time and at any time. Depending on the type of accident you might suffer, our personal accident insurance can cover you up to €600,000 with our Platinum cover. You'll be covered 24 hours a day; at home, at work or abroad (up to 180 consecutive days). All cash benefits are paid directly to you, so you can use them as you see fit. Help pay for taxis to and from hospital, pay off bills while you are off work, adapt your home to help you live independently after your injury, or to take a holiday to get over your accident. You can also add your spouse/partner and children to your policy for an additional premium.

Frequently Asked Questions

As long as you are aged 18-74 years and are permanently resident in the Republic of Ireland you can purchase this plan. Terms and conditions are available for persons outside this criteria.

 

The Plan pays out a cash benefit if you have an accident leading to the following: 

  • Fatal Accident 
  • Permanent Total Disablement 
  • Hospitalisation as a result of an accident (payable daily for up to 6 months)
  • Fractures and Dislocations 
  • Physiotherapy following a covered fracture or dislocation.

Please note: children have reduced cover and are not covered for some benefits. Please see Policy Wording for full details of terms and conditions.

Physiotherapy considered medically necessary by a doctor following a valid claim under items 12 or 13 within 26 weeks of the fracture or dislocation.

*The accidental death benefit for children is fixed at €5,000 (Gold cover) and €10,000 (Platinum cover). For children all other benefits are 10% of the adult benefit levels shown in the table of benefits. For bodily injury sustained whilst on a motorcycle all benefits are reduced by 50%.

You can cover yourself and your partner or spouse if aged between 18-74 years old. You can also cover children from the age of 6 months up to 18 years old, or up to the age of 23 if they are in full time education.

You can make a single annual payment if you prefer. Simply multiply the monthly premium you have chosen by 12 and call us on 1800 646 747. We can take payment over the phone by debit or credit card.

You are covered 24 hours a day for 365 days of the year once your policy is accepted and the cover is bound. Your cover is for accidents no matter where they take place, as long as you are not resident outside the Republic of Ireland for more than 180 consecutive days.

No medical examination is required to take out this Plan.

Yes, as soon as we process your completed application. Your effective date will be shown on your policy schedule.

After an accident you must fill in a claim form. This is available on our website in the contact us section, by phone on Freephone 1800 646 747 or by emailing personalaccident.ie@aig.com.

Cancelling the policy during the cooling off period 

If the cover does not meet your requirements you may cancel this policy within 15 days of the policy effective date shown in your schedule or within 15 days of receiving your policy, whichever is the later. We will give you a full refund of any premiums paid so long as you have not claimed. Premium will be returned to the policyholder within 5 working days from the date we receive notice of cancellation from the policyholder.

Cancelling the policy after the cooling off period

The policyholder may cancel this policy by giving us notice in writing to AIG Europe Limited, 30 Northwall Quay, IFSC, Dublin 1

Yes, our Personal Accident Plan does cover you should you be involved in an accident whilst riding a motorbike. However, all benefits payable under the Plan are reduced by 50% for accidents whilst riding a motorbike.

Yes, horse riding is covered provided it is not on a professional or semi-professional basis.

Yes, the Personal Accident Plan does cover you while skiing as long as not doing so on a professional or semi-professional basis.

No benefit for bodily injury will be payable: 

  • if the accident occurs in a country where a state of war exists (declared or not) if the accident was the direct consequence of the war;
  • if bodily injury is sustained while you are flying, unless you are a fare-paying passenger on a commercial flight;
  • if you take a drug or drugs other than according to the manufacturer’s instructions or as prescribed by a registered medical practitioner;
  • if you take a drug or drugs for the treatment of drug addiction;
  • if your bodily injury is sustained whilst directly involved in an unlawful act;
  • if you deliberately or recklessly expose yourself to danger;
  • that results in fibromyalgia (a syndrome characterised by chronic pain in the muscles and soft tissues surrounding joints, fatigue and tenderness at specific sites in the body), myalgic encephalomyelitis (muscle pains and inflammation of the brain and spinal cord), chronic fatigue syndrome, post-traumatic stress disorder or other anxiety disorder, any mental disorder or any disease of the nervous system;
  • if the accident occurs whilst driving, or in charge of, a vehicle and your blood/urine alcohol level is above the legal limit stated in the laws of the country where the accident occurs;
  • if bodily injury is contributed to by you participating in, practising or training for a sport as a professional or semi-professional;
  • if it results from sickness or disease;
  • if your injuries are intentionally self-inflicted;
  • if bodily injury is sustained whilst you commit or attempt to commit suicide;
  • resulting from a gradually operating cause.

No, your rate will not increase as you get older.

The accidental death benefit will be paid to your legal representative or executor and their receipt will discharge our liability under the policy. Any other benefit due will be paid to the insured person who is the subject of the claim except in the case of a child, when it will be paid to the policyholder provided that they are a parent of the child, otherwise it will be paid to the child’s parent.

No, this is Personal Accident Plan and only covers death resulting from an accident as defined in the policy.
